PLOS and their new data sharing policy

This week the non-profit publisher PLOS (Public Library of Science) has revised and updated its data sharing policy for all PLOS journals.

From 03rd March 2014 all authors who submit to a PLOS journal will be asked to provide a Data Availability Statement, describing where and how others can access each dataset that underlies the findings. The Data Availability Statement will be published on the first page of each article.

PLOS state:
"...authors must make all data publicly available, without restriction, immediately upon publication of the article. "

Further guidance is provided on their blog. Information is provided on:

  • What they mean by data
  • What they mean by publicly available
  • Allowable exceptions to data sharing
Further updates and comments can be found @PLOS
